What is Crysvita?

Crysvita is a prescription medicine used to treat certain rare conditions that affect bone growth and phosphate levels in the body.

It is most commonly used for:

  • X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH)
  • Some other rare phosphate-wasting disorders

Crysvita helps the body hold onto phosphate, which is important for strong bones and healthy growth.

What is phosphate?

Phosphate is a mineral that helps:

  • Build strong bones and teeth
  • Support muscle function
  • Provide energy for the body

Children with low phosphate levels may have:

  • Bone pain
  • Weak bones
  • Slow growth
  • Bowed legs
  • Trouble walking

Crysvita helps increase phosphate levels to support healthier bones and growth.

How is Crysvita given?

Crysvita is:

  • Given as a shot under the skin
  • Usually given every 2 weeks in children
  • Given by a healthcare provider or trained caregiver

Common injection sites include:

  • Upper arms
  • Thighs
  • Stomach
  • Buttocks

Your child’s endocrinology team will decide the correct dose and schedule.

What are common side effects?

Many children tolerate Crysvita well. Common side effects may include:

  • Redness or pain at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Arm or leg pain
  • Tooth pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Dizziness

Most side effects are mild.

When should I call the doctor?

Call your child’s healthcare provider if your child has:

  • Severe bone or muscle pain
  • Trouble walking
  • Severe headache
  • Rash or swelling
  • Trouble breathing
  • Signs of an allergic reaction
  • New or worsening weakness

Get emergency help right away for severe allergic reactions or breathing problems.

Important safety information

Your child will need regular:

  • Blood tests
  • Phosphate level monitoring
  • Growth checks
  • Bone health monitoring

Do not give oral phosphate or certain vitamin D medicines unless your provider tells you to.

Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines and supplements your child takes.

Tips for families

  • Keep all lab and clinic appointments
  • Track your child’s growth and symptoms
  • Follow the injection schedule closely
  • Report new bone pain or walking problems

Treatment can help improve bone strength, growth, and overall comfort over time.
